Yves Bissouma is close to a fresh start in familiar European territory, with the former Tottenham midfielder set to join Ajax on a short-term deal.
The 30-year-old, released by Spurs in June at the end of his contract, is in Amsterdam to finalise an agreement that will keep him at the Eredivisie club until the end of the season, with an option for a further 12 months. Ajax, rebuilding and reshaping, are moving for a player who once dominated midfields in England.
For Bissouma, it marks a route back into top-level football after his time in north London fizzled out. He arrived at Tottenham in 2022 from Brighton amid high expectations and a sizeable reputation, and went on to make 111 appearances for the club. At his best, he offered exactly what Premier League managers crave: bite in the tackle, energy over the ground, and a willingness to take the ball under pressure.
Yet his Spurs career never quite settled into the rhythm many predicted. One moment in particular underlined the shift in his status. In August 2025, then Tottenham manager Thomas Frank left him out of the squad for the UEFA Super Cup clash with Paris St-Germain, citing persistent lateness. For a player once seen as a cornerstone of the midfield, it was a stark sign of how far he had slipped down the pecking order.
Now comes the reset. Ajax, historically one of Europe’s great talent factories, also know the value of experience at the heart of their side. A seasoned Mali international, Bissouma brings years of Premier League football and European exposure to a dressing room that has leaned heavily on youth.
If the deal is completed as expected, he will land in a league that suits midfielders who can both destroy and build. The tempo of the Eredivisie, the technical demands, the expectation to control games from the centre – it all offers Bissouma a platform to show he can still command a match.
For Ajax, it is a calculated move: a short contract, an option to extend, and a player with a point to prove.
For Bissouma, it may be the last big chance to show that the midfielder who once lit up Brighton’s engine room has not disappeared, only been waiting for the right stage.
