Swansea winger Zeidane Inoussa is set to swap one promotion chase for another, with a loan move to Championship rivals Portsmouth lined up for the rest of the season.
The 24-year-old arrived at Swansea last summer from Swedish side BK Hacken for a significant fee, billed as a long-term wide option and handed a contract through to 2030. The first chapter has not gone to plan. One goal in 29 appearances and an injury-disrupted campaign have left him on the fringes just as the squad around him has been reshaped.
Now the door is opening elsewhere.
Portsmouth, newly up from League One and eager to add pace and direct running out wide, are ready to take Inoussa on loan as they look to deepen a squad that has had to make the leap in level quickly. For Swansea, the move reflects a changing hierarchy in the wide areas rather than a complete loss of faith in a player tied down for the long term.
The competition has stiffened. Moussa Yeo and Joseph Opoku have arrived this summer, both younger, hungry and already pushing for minutes. Jeremy Monga, the Manchester City youngster, is expected to follow, adding another layer of dynamism on the flanks. With that wave of arrivals, something had to give.
Inoussa is the first.
Swansea are also looking to move on Florian Bianchini after a disappointing loan spell at Portsmouth last season, a stint that never really caught fire on the south coast. His situation underlines how fine the margins are for wide players trying to make an impact in a promotion-focused squad.
There is uncertainty elsewhere in the department too. Speculation continues around the future of Ronald, another winger whose role could shift as Swansea’s recruitment drive reshapes the pecking order out wide.
For Inoussa, though, the picture is clear. A fresh start, a new crowd, and a chance to prove that last season was a blip rather than a verdict. Portsmouth get a powerful, pacey winger with something to prove. Swansea get breathing space in a crowded position and the opportunity to see whether a season on the south coast can unlock the player they thought they were signing.
