Marta Kostyuk has reached the quarter-finals of the Guadalajara Open without striking a single ball in anger.
The top seed in Mexico, ranked No 10 in the world, walked into the last eight on Wednesday when Taylor Townsend withdrew from their scheduled second-round clash because of illness. That came after Kostyuk had already been handed a first-round bye.
So the tournament’s headline act is in the quarters, but her racquet is still waiting to be tested.

That will change against Liudmila Samsonova. The eighth seed from Russia survived a draining three-set battle with Kayla Day, edging through 7-6 (7-4) 2-6 7-6 (7-5) in a match that swung wildly before Samsonova held her nerve in both tie-breaks. She arrives at the Kostyuk showdown already hardened by the altitude, the court speed and the tension of a knife-edge opener.
Kostyuk, by contrast, will step into the Guadalajara heat carrying form rather than court time. The 24-year-old is in the middle of the best season of her career, crowned by a maiden WTA 1000 title in Madrid in May. She has backed that breakthrough with deep runs at the very top level, reaching the semi-finals at both the French Open and Wimbledon.
Her most recent outing came in New York, where she fell in the last 16 of the US Open to sixth seed Linda Noskova. It was a reminder of the fine margins at the sharp end of the women’s game, but also further proof that Kostyuk now lives in that rarefied air week after week.
Now Guadalajara offers something different: a quarter-final reached on paper, not on court, and a first match against an opponent already battle-scarred. Does the fresher body beat the sharper instincts, or does Samsonova’s early grind give her the edge when the top seed finally has to play for her place?
