Abishek Porel, the young Bengal wicketkeeper-batter who turned heads in the IPL with Delhi Capitals, has been released on bail after spending more than a month in custody in connection with an alleged rape and criminal intimidation case.
The bail was granted by a Chinsurah court, as reported by ABP Ananda and corroborated by multiple outlets, bringing a temporary halt to a dramatic off-field chapter in the 23-year-old’s fledgling career.
Allegations and legal trail
Porel was arrested on August 11 following a complaint lodged by a medical student from Karnataka. In her statement, she said she had been in a relationship with Porel for roughly three-and-a-half years and claimed the two had discussed marriage. She also alleged they had travelled abroad together during that period.
According to the complaint, the relationship deteriorated when Porel later denied it, prompting her to approach the police. She had filed her complaint at Mogra police station on June 23, also referring to an earlier dispute between them around one-and-a-half years ago. That earlier incident, she said, had drawn police intervention but did not result in a formal complaint at the time.
Police registered a case under Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with Sections 311 and 318 and other provisions of the BNS, as well as Sections 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act. The file did not stay local for long. The matter moved to the Calcutta High Court, which ordered Porel’s arrest and directed authorities to seize his electronic devices amid concerns over possible dissemination of photographs of the complainant.
The proceedings have involved not only the rape allegation but also accusations of criminal intimidation and other offences.
Porel was produced before the Chinsurah court after his arrest, where his first bid for bail failed. He was remanded to judicial custody and remained in jail for 36 days before the court granted him bail, according to the ABP Ananda report. Porel has previously denied the allegations against him.
A career at a crossroads
Until the case broke into public view, Porel’s name was largely associated with his crisp glove work and clean ball striking.
He joined the Delhi Capitals setup in 2023 and made his IPL debut that year. In the 2026 season, he scored 108 runs in four innings for the franchise, hinting at a player capable of stepping into bigger roles in high-pressure environments.
Across formats, his numbers underline steady progress. Porel has played 35 T20 matches, scoring 769 runs at an average of 25.63 and a strike rate of 145.37, with four fifties to his name. In red-ball cricket, he broke into the Bengal first-class side in the 2021-22 season and has since become a regular, featuring in 32 first-class matches and 23 List A games.
For now, the focus around him is less about strike rates and more about court dates. With bail granted and serious charges still hanging over his head, the next moves in both his legal battle and his cricketing journey will be watched closely across domestic dressing rooms and IPL boardrooms alike.
