Auqib Nabi’s rise continues to gather pace. The fast bowler, fresh from a standout domestic season in India, has signed a short-term deal with Surrey and will be available for their next three County Championship fixtures against Yorkshire, Sussex and Glamorgan.
For Surrey, the move is about survival and ambition in equal measure. Six Championship matches in six weeks, with barely any time to breathe between county and international commitments, has stretched their resources. Alec Stewart, Director of Men’s Cricket, made the situation plain as he confirmed Nabi’s arrival, stressing the need to bolster the club’s bowling stocks for the run-in.
The answer has come from Jammu and Kashmir’s spearhead, a bowler in the middle of a genuine purple patch. Nabi was the driving force behind Jammu and Kashmir’s historic maiden Ranji Trophy title, ripping through line-ups to claim 60 wickets across the campaign and walk away with the player of the tournament award. That haul did more than win a trophy; it shoved his name firmly into every selector’s notebook.
The rewards followed quickly. Delhi Capitals moved decisively, handing him a bumper IPL contract for the 2026 season. Nabi featured in five games, a first taste of the league’s intensity and scrutiny, and a clear sign that franchises see more than just domestic promise in his right arm.
His upward curve did not stop there. The 29-year-old earned a place with India A and then stepped even closer to the big stage, joining the senior Test squad in Sri Lanka as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement. He did not debut, but the message was unmistakable: he is now on the fringes of full international cricket.
New Challenges Ahead
Now comes a different kind of test. English conditions. A packed schedule. A dressing room stacked with experience and expectation. For Nabi, Surrey offers both a challenge and a classroom.
“It’s an honour to join Surrey, one of the best Clubs in England,” Nabi said, underlining what this move means to him personally. “I’m looking forward to learning from the group and helping them for the next three matches.”
