Brydon Carse’s week was supposed to be about a Test match. Instead, it has become about a night out, a pair of handcuffs and an unfolding police investigation.
Derbyshire Police have confirmed they are investigating allegations of assault in Derby city centre after images emerged on social media showing the England fast bowler restrained by officers outside a nightclub on Saturday night.
The pictures, widely shared on Sunday, showed the 31-year-old in handcuffs, surrounded by police, during a night out in Derby. Carse was briefly arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly, before being released.
The incident has already had consequences for his international career. The England and Wales Cricket Board has confirmed the matter will be examined by the Cricket Regulator, and Carse has been withdrawn from the England squad for the second Test against Pakistan.
His immediate playing future is not entirely on hold, though. Durham have named him in their County Championship side for the match against Gloucestershire, a striking contrast to his removal from the Test setup while the regulatory process plays out.
Derbyshire Police first addressed the episode on Monday, outlining the initial arrest outside Molly Malone's bar.
“A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly in Derby city centre on Saturday night,” their statement read. “However the man was de-arrested shortly afterwards having agreed to leave the area.”
That might have been the end of it. It wasn’t.
By Wednesday, the tone had shifted. A fresh statement confirmed that officers are now looking into more serious claims linked to the same night.
“We are investigating allegations of an assault in Derby city centre. No arrests have yet been made and the investigation is ongoing,” police said.
Carse has been approached for comment but has not yet responded. The ECB, beyond confirming the Cricket Regulator’s involvement and his removal from the Test squad, has not issued any further public statement.
For a bowler trying to cement his place in England’s plans, the next spell he faces will not be with the ball in hand, but under the scrutiny of regulators and detectives, with his reputation and short-term international prospects on the line.
