Georgia Adams produced a captain’s performance of the highest order to fire Hampshire into the One-Day Cup knockouts, dominating Durham with ball and bat in a ruthless nine-wicket win at Chester-le-Street.
She controlled the day from the moment she took the new ball. Her figures of 2-26 set the tone, her off-spin clamping down on any early ambition Durham had after choosing to bat. Partner in crime Amanda-Jade Wellington matched her intensity, the pair squeezing the life out of the innings as Durham laboured to 200-9.
It never looked enough. Not once Adams picked up her bat.
Adams takes charge
Durham’s decision to set a total quickly ran into trouble against Hampshire’s spin. Adams and Wellington bowled in tandem, 20 overs of control and craft returning a combined 5-56. Every time Durham tried to rebuild, another wicket fell, the middle overs turning into a slow suffocation.
From 129-8, then 158-9, the hosts were staring at something well short of par. Only a spirited last-wicket stand kept them in the contest at all. Young Australian Eleanor Larosa played with freedom and intent, striking 51 from 36 balls, while Katie Levick’s 12 helped drag the total to 200-9 with an unbroken 42-run partnership in just four overs.
It was brave. It was also nowhere near enough once Adams walked out to open.
She immediately settled any nerves in the Hampshire dressing room, working the ball around, punishing anything loose. An opening stand of 86 with Ella McCaughan, who made a steady 31, knocked the stuffing out of Durham’s attack.
The pressure finally told. Fields spread, shoulders dropped, and Adams simply went through the gears.
With McCaughan gone, Abi Norgrove joined her and the pair shut the door on any hint of a comeback. Their unbroken 115-run stand underlined Hampshire’s authority, Norgrove finishing 59 not out while Adams completed a superb unbeaten 106 from 106 balls. The target disappeared with 12.3 overs to spare, five points pocketed, and a knockout place secured alongside The Blaze.
Last year’s runners-up had stumbled recently against Lancashire. Here, they looked every inch a side ready to go one step further.
Warwickshire surge into third
Behind them, the scrap for the final qualification spot tightened again, and Warwickshire seized their chance.
Facing bottom side Essex at Edgbaston, the Bears knew this was a must-take opportunity. They did not waste it.
Essex, batting first, threatened a collapse when they slid to 115-5. Liberty Heap and Sophia Smale dragged them back into the game with a determined sixth-wicket stand worth 75. Heap top-scored with 52, Smale added 42, and for a while Warwickshire were made to work.
Then the spinners took over.
Phoebe Brett ripped through the order with 4-42, Hannah Baker backed her up with 3-26, and Essex’s resistance ended in the 45th over at 202 all out. A competitive score on paper. In reality, Warwickshire’s chase carried a sense of inevitability.
They did wobble at 86-3, a moment that could have opened the door. Instead, captain Katie George and Abi Freeborn slammed it shut.
The pair batted with intent and clarity, stripping away any tension with a brisk, commanding partnership. They added 122 at better than a run a ball, dismantling the Essex attack. Freeborn’s 64 anchored the chase, George controlled the tempo and then finished the job in style, launching a six to seal victory.
George’s unbeaten 72 brought up her fourth half-century of the competition to go with a century already in the bank. Warwickshire crossed the line with 81 balls to spare, banked maximum points, and jumped into third, one point clear of Somerset.
Run-in loaded with jeopardy
Elsewhere, defending champions Lancashire kept their late charge alive with a fourth straight win, edging Surrey by 10 runs on DLS at Farington. The Blaze are already through. Hampshire have joined them. Lancashire lurk ominously.
Between Warwickshire, Somerset, and the rest of the chasing pack, that final knockout place now hangs in the balance.
Adams has done her part. George has dragged Warwickshire into position. The question now is who holds their nerve when the margins tighten and the safety net disappears.
