Gloucestershire have moved early to secure one of county cricket’s more intriguing young quicks, bringing in fast bowler Che Simmons on loan from Warwickshire for the rest of the season ahead of a permanent switch in 2027.
The 22-year-old will slot straight into Gloucestershire’s push to finish the County Championship campaign strongly, available for their final three red-ball fixtures. His short-term stint comes with a clear long-term commitment: a two-year deal starting next season is already agreed.
It is a decisive play. Simmons, who made his County Championship debut for Warwickshire in 2024, has been on the fringes at Edgbaston, limited to just three first-class appearances. For a bowler with pace and upside, second-team overs could only satisfy him for so long.
He made no secret that the lure of regular senior cricket drove the move, describing the chance to play consistent first-team cricket as a “big factor” in his decision to change counties. At 22, those words carry weight; this is a career call, not a short-term fix.
Gloucestershire see the same potential. Director of cricket Jon Lewis called Simmons “a hugely talented young cricketer with a very high ceiling” and pointed to his heavy workload in Warwickshire’s second XI as proof he is ready to step up. In Lewis’s eyes, this is the moment Simmons must test himself against Championship batters week in, week out.
For Warwickshire, it means a prized prospect leaving the queue. For Gloucestershire, it feels like a calculated gamble on a fast bowler whose best years should be ahead of him.
The next three games will offer the first real glimpse of whether that bet is about to pay off.
