Hampshire, already under pressure at the foot of Division One, have walked straight into a storm of their own making with the low‑key inclusion of Scott Kuggeleijn in their County Championship squad.
The New Zealand seamer appeared on a 15-man squad list for the match against Warwickshire, posted on X, without any prior announcement from the club that he had been signed as an overseas player. There was no unveiling, no statement, no explanation. Just a name on a team sheet.
The reaction from sections of the Hampshire support was instant and fierce. One fan branded the decision “a disgrace”, another called it “shameful” and “a new low for the club”. The anger was not about his bowling average. It was about his past.
A signing steeped in controversy
Kuggeleijn, 34, has long been one of the most contentious figures in New Zealand cricket. In 2015 he was charged with sexual violation by rape and indecent assault in relation to two separate complainants. After a hung jury in the first trial, he was acquitted following a second trial.
The verdict did not end the debate. Each time he has pulled on a New Zealand shirt or represented a domestic side, protests have followed. In 2019, spectators at Eden Park held up posters objecting to his selection, turning an international fixture into a public argument about who should represent their country.
For Northern Districts, Kuggeleijn has been a regular for more than a decade, spending the past 12 years with the side. Now he has crossed hemispheres for a short stint, drafted in by Hampshire for the final four matches of their Championship campaign.
The club, though, chose not to front up publicly before naming him. No statement addressing his history. No attempt to prepare their fanbase. The omission has only sharpened the sense of unease.
Relegation battle overshadowed
On the field, Hampshire are in trouble. They sit bottom of Division One, 16 points adrift of Leicestershire, a side they still have to face in the run-in. Every selection call now carries extra weight. Every overseas signing is supposed to be a lifeline.
Instead, this one has become a flashpoint.
With the club fighting to avoid relegation, Kuggeleijn’s arrival was presumably intended as a hard-nosed cricketing decision: experience, pace, a late-season boost. What it has delivered so far is a backlash from supporters who feel blindsided by the process and uncomfortable with the choice.
The squad announcement was meant to set up a crucial match against Warwickshire. Instead, it has left Hampshire answering a very different question: in a season where every point matters, how much off-field controversy can a struggling club afford to carry?
