Marnus Labuschagne will walk back into his past before he even takes guard this October.
The Australia No. 3 has been named in a 16-man Test squad for next month’s tour of South Africa, a selection that cuts through months of debate about his place and his form. Three years without a Test century, dropped from the white-ball sides, his technique and tempo pulled apart on repeat — and yet, for the longest and toughest format, the selectors have stayed with him.
They have done so for a tour that will carry a different weight for Labuschagne. Born in South Africa and raised there until the age of 10, he has never played a Test in the country of his birth. That changes in Durban, Gqeberha and Cape Town, where the noise around his future will follow him into every innings.
The squad itself is a familiar spine with a few sharp new edges.
Pat Cummins leads a pace attack anchored by Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, with Scott Boland again the relentless option in reserve. Nathan Lyon remains the frontline spinner, his workload set to be heavy across three Tests in three different coastal conditions.
Around them, the selectors have injected fresh power and variety.
Cooper Connolly, the big-hitting all-rounder, earns a place after catching the eye domestically and joining the group that faced Bangladesh in Mackay last month. Matthew Kuhnemann returns as a left-arm spin option, a valuable contrast to Lyon’s off-spin if pitches tire or South Africa’s left-handers pile up.
Michael Neser, like Labuschagne a South Africa-born Australian, is back in the Test squad as the seam-bowling all-rounder who can swing the ball and lengthen the batting. His presence underlines how seriously Australia view the conditions: new-ball assistance early, then hard work as the Kookaburra softens.
The batting core stays intact. Steve Smith, Travis Head and Cameron Green sit around Labuschagne, with Alex Carey behind the stumps and Josh Inglis again the back-up keeper. Matthew Renshaw offers top-order cover, while Beau Webster’s inclusion gives the squad another tall, multi-skilled option who can plug gaps with both bat and ball.
Australia’s men will open the series in Durban from October 9-13, move to Gqeberha from October 18-22, and finish at Newlands in Cape Town from October 27-31. Three Tests, three very different venues, and a tour that often reveals more about a side’s temperament than its technique.
For Labuschagne, it is something more than that. A return to where his story started, with his place in the next chapter of Australia’s Test side still very much on the line.
