South Africa’s fast-bowling stocks have taken another hit. Ottneil Baartman has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Australia with a left hamstring injury, cutting short what was meant to be his return to the international fold.
Cricket South Africa confirmed the setback on Sunday, revealing that Baartman picked up the injury during Dolphins’ opening fixture of the CSA 4-Day Series Division 1 against Titans this week. He managed just five overs in Titans’ only innings and didn’t come out to bat in Dolphins’ second dig. That was the first sign something was wrong. The diagnosis has now removed him from the Australia series entirely.
In his place, the selectors have turned to Duan Jansen, a left-arm quick who has been quietly building momentum. Jansen, who debuted in the recent Namibia T20I tri-series, has already stepped into the ODI arena in the ongoing series in Namibia. He made an immediate impression there, returning figures of 4 for 31 in the second one-dayer. With South Africa already 2-0 up in that three-match series, he was one of three changes for the final fixture, a sign of growing trust from the team management.
Jansen will link up with the squad on September 19 when they assemble in Durban to prepare for Australia. It is another rapid step in a year that has accelerated his rise from promising domestic seamer to full international squad member.
Baartman’s absence is a personal blow. He had been working his way back into rhythm after a busy stretch. The seamer last turned out for South Africa in the New Zealand T20Is in March, having also been part of the India tour in November-December, which was the side’s previous ODI assignment before the current Namibia series.
He kept himself in the shop window with a stint in Major League Cricket in June and July, then returned to South African domestic cricket with Dolphins this week. The plan was clear: bank overs, build form, push for a sustained run with the national side. The hamstring has stopped that charge for now.
The timing is awkward for South Africa’s selectors. Kagiso Rabada is already sidelined as he continues his own recovery from a hamstring problem. Anrich Nortje has not been considered. That leaves the attack relying on a blend of returning names and emerging quicks.
Gerald Coetzee, who hasn’t played ODIs since the 2023 World Cup, has been recalled to bolster the pace unit. Around him, the group has a different feel: Marco Jansen’s all-round presence, Lungi Ngidi’s experience, the raw pace and promise of Kwena Maphaka, and the versatility of Corbin Bosch. Now Duan Jansen joins that mix, another left-armer with height, bounce, and something to prove.
For Baartman, the road back begins again. For South Africa, the question is sharper: can this reshaped pace attack absorb another blow and still stand up to Australia’s batting firepower over the next few weeks?
