Worcestershire have turned to a familiar face at a critical point in their season, re-signing Pakistan leg-spinner Usama Mir for the remainder of their County Championship campaign.
Mir, who made his first-class debut for the Pears in 2023, comes in as a replacement for all-rounder Beyers Swanepoel and will be available for the final three Division Two fixtures. His stint begins immediately, with Northamptonshire visiting New Road on Tuesday.
This is no punt on an unknown overseas name. Mir has already settled into life at Worcestershire, having featured in white-ball cricket this season after agreeing a three-year T20 deal earlier in the year. From 2027, he will even be classified as a ‘local’ player, underlining how deeply the club see him fitting into their long-term plans.
For now, though, the need is urgent and very present. With a short turnaround to cover Swanepoel’s absence, Worcestershire moved fast.
“Usama is someone we know very well and is a high-class operator who will bring plenty of experience to our side for the final three County Championship matches,” head coach Alan Richardson told the club’s website. “Given the short turnaround we had to act swiftly to find a replacement, so to be able to add him to the squad before Tuesday is a real boost for us.”
Mir’s return arms Worcestershire with a proven attacking option at the back end of the season, just as the pitches begin to tire and spin becomes a more decisive factor. The Pears know exactly what they are getting. Now they need his overs – and his nous – to count when it matters most.
