Chennai Super Kings have turned a monumental page. After 18 years of Stephen Fleming at the heart of their think tank, CSK have handed the reins to another heavyweight of the modern era: Zaheer Khan.
The former India left-arm pacer has been named head coach for IPL 2027, stepping into a role that, at Chennai, is closer to a stewardship of tradition than a simple coaching job.
Fleming exits, legacy intact
Fleming’s departure always felt like the end of a long-running epic. Player, captain, then coach, he effectively grew with the franchise, shaping four titles and a culture that outlasted squads and cycles. His move to England, where he was appointed men’s Test head coach in July, finally created a vacancy that CSK had spent almost two decades avoiding.
Replacing that kind of continuity is never straightforward. CSK have chosen to do it with pedigree and presence.
Zaheer’s second act gathers pace
Zaheer retired from the IPL in 2017 after stints with Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals, finishing with 100 matches and 102 wickets at 27.27. Those numbers only scratch the surface of his reputation: a master of angles, seam, and big-match temperament, central to India’s surge in the 2000s.
Since hanging up his boots, he has quietly built a serious off-field résumé. Mumbai Indians first brought him into the boardroom, naming him Director of Cricket Operations ahead of IPL 2019. He later moved into the role of head of global development, helping shape MI’s broader cricketing footprint.
Most recently, he was appointed mentor at Lucknow Super Giants for IPL 2025, a short but notable stint that ended before the following season. Each role pushed him deeper into talent identification, structure, and long-term planning — skills CSK now want at the heart of their next cycle.
“An honour” and a familiar foe
For Zaheer, this is not just another job. It’s a switch of dugouts after years of lining up against the yellow wall.
"It's an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL," he said in the CSK announcement. He spoke of his on-field battles with Chennai and the unique noise of Chepauk, calling the atmosphere created by the Superfans “even more special” and adding that he “can’t wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history.”
The language is respectful, but the subtext is clear: he understands he is not starting from scratch. He is stepping into a living, breathing ecosystem.
CSK back experience and intellect
Inside the franchise, the excitement is measured but firm.
Owner Rupa Gurunath framed the appointment as both a continuation and a refresh. “We are pleased to confirm Zaheer Khan as the Head Coach for Chennai Super Kings,” she said, highlighting his “distinguished playing career” and his “proven ability to nurture young talent” as key reasons behind the move. CSK, she stressed, believe his guidance will strengthen the core of the franchise.
Managing Director KS Viswanathan went straight to the heart of Zaheer’s appeal: his cricketing brain and his influence on fast bowlers. He called Zaheer “a world class bowler” and “a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years,” and reminded everyone that he was “one of the key reasons for India's success in the 2000s.” For Viswanathan, Zaheer ranks among “the finest cricketing brains,” a quality Chennai clearly value as they retool after the Fleming years.
From Chepauk rival to Chepauk architect
The move carries a certain symmetry. For years, Zaheer’s job was to silence Chepauk, to outthink CSK batters, to break partnerships under the lights. Now he walks into that same cauldron as the man tasked with plotting their next title run.
He inherits a team used to stability, a fanbase that measures time in eras, not seasons, and a legacy that demands both respect and evolution. How quickly he can stamp his own identity on a franchise so deeply associated with another coach will shape not just CSK’s immediate future, but the next chapter of the IPL’s most enduring dynasty.
