Barnsley have moved to strengthen their back line with the loan signing of Blackburn Rovers defender Connor O'Riordan on a season-long deal, including an option to buy next summer.
The 22-year-old, capped by the Republic of Ireland up to Under-21 level, arrives with fresh experience of the division. He spent the first half of last season in League One with Doncaster, learning the grind of the schedule and the physical edge of the league at close quarters.
Blackburn recalled him in January, and O'Riordan went on to make six appearances in all competitions for the Championship side. Not a headline figure, but enough to suggest Blackburn saw value in testing him at a higher level before sanctioning another move.
Now comes the next step.
Barnsley have given themselves a season to assess him properly, with the safety net – or opportunity – of a permanent deal at the end of it. If he settles quickly, that clause could look shrewd rather than cautious.
His first audition may come immediately. O'Riordan is in line to make his Tykes debut in Saturday’s trip to Leyton Orient, a fixture that should offer an early glimpse of how comfortably he slots into the Barnsley back line and how ready he is to anchor a promotion push rather than just survive another loan spell.
